Why Hic Sunt Dariones?

The Latin phrase "Hic Sunt Leones" (here there are Lions) is recurrent in history and journalism but without parallel in the medieval cartographic documentation or in the "old Age" rare finds.

There is no single historical proof that the phrase has ever been used by a cartographer for the Mediterranean Africa, although there is a very common explanation that, originally, hic sunt leones would have appeared on maps of Ancient Rome and of later age indicating unexplored areas of Africa and Asia.

The phrase was meant that no one knew what was in those unknown lands, apart from the fact that they were inhabited by wild beasts, or were referring to areas that could not be conquered.

Nowadays the phrase is used to describe a situation or condition for which you should pay special attention or respect to a certain group of people.

Again, why Hic Sunt Dariones?

I am totally fond of Ancient Rome, my beloved city, where I was born 43 years ago, under the sign of Leo. 

All the people I know, except my family and close friends, have seen so far just one Dario. My interests, my work or other aspects of myself as a person are those unknown lands... that could not be conquered.

Who will be moved by curiosity of visiting them, in this Blog will find other Dariones, and will have to pay special attention...

Perchè il nome Hic Sunt Dariones?
La locuzione latina "Hic Sunt Leones" (qui ci sono i leoni) è ricorrente nella storiografia e nella pubblicistica ma senza riscontri nella documentazione cartografica medievale né nei rarissimi reperti dell'età antica.
Non esiste una sola prova storica che la locuzione sia mai stata utilizzata da un cartografo per l'Africa mediterranea, anche se è molto diffusa la spiegazione secondo cui, in origine, la locuzione latina hic sunt leones sarebbe comparsa su carte geografiche dell'antica Roma e di età successiva in corrispondenza delle zone inesplorate dell'Africa e dell'Asia.
La frase stava ad indicare che non si sapeva cosa si trovasse in quelle lande sconosciute, a parte il fatto che fossero abitate da belve feroci, oppure si riferiva a territori che non potevano essere conquistati.

La frase oggi viene utilizzata per indicare una situazione o condizione per cui è necessario prestare particolare attenzione o portare rispetto ad un certo gruppo di persone.


Quindi - di nuovo - perchè Hic Sunt Dariones?
Sono perdutamente innamorato dell'Antica Roma, la mia amata città, dove sono nato 43 anni fa, sotto il segno del Leone.
Tutte le persone che conosco, ad eccezione dei miei familiari o degli amici più stretti, conoscono un solo Dario. I miei interessi, il mio lavoro o altri aspetti di me come persona sono in quelle lande sconosciute... che non possono essere conquistate.
